Anodos Activities

The Anodos Foundation was incorporated six months after the death of Arthur M. Young in 1995. The mission of Anodos is to help develop and support ways of applying Young's theory of process to current real needs in society, particularly in the areas of education, health, management, and science. Both the purpose and the name of the foundation conform to an insight that Young expressed most succinctly in the last few months of his life. He observed that the core problem in the worldview of modern science, which is its omission of first cause or free will, arises from the schism between theory and application. He felt that since application, (mechanics), is looked down on by most theorists, they tend to ignore its unique character. Only application requires and incorporates all the measure formulae of physics. In fact, application "is" the third derivative; i.e., the option to exert control. Young's intent was to heal this schism by formulating a theoretical system, a cosmology, encompasssing both determinism and free will. His theory of process demonstrates that Life uses the laws of nature, applying determinable means to achieve chosen goals, thereby reversing entropy. It is in recognition of this dynamic that our foundation was named "anodos", the term used by Plato in his allegory of the cave, to mean "the ascent". We believe that Arthur Young's theory and vision will 'come to life' as it is used as a tool to solve practical problems confronting us in both our individual evolution and societal concerns.

ARCHIVES: One of the first actions of Anodos was to conserve the library and unpublished papers of Arthur M. Young. The main body of these archives had been compiled and safeguarded in Pennsylvania under the auspices of his wife, Ruth Forbes Young, until Anodos was prepared to house the material in California. The formidable task of constructing and completing a database embracing the content of the archives has been ably launched by Kathy Goss, also under the sponsorship of Ruth F. Young. Anodos is commited to complete this project as time and funding permit, because of its value to future researchers and students of the history of the study of consciousness.

WEBSITE (http://www.ArthurYoung.com): This beautiful and effective site was initiated, designed and implemented by Arthur Bloch in January, 1996. He remains the manager of the site, and Anodos is proud to be its sponsor.

PUBLICATIONS: The foundation has established "Anodos Publications" in order to ensure that the published works of Arthur Young remain in print as well as to create a means for producing new books, such as his astrological autobiography, Nested Time, due to be published in 1999. The first volume to be published is a new printing of The Reflexive Universe.
Anodos was empowered to take this action by the generous gift of the literary estate of Arthur Young, including all its copyrights, from Ruth F. Young. Equally essential to the future of these works has been the continuous support of Robert Briggs in the transfer of publishing duties from Robert Briggs Associates to Anodos. For decades, RBA has developed and produced the books of Arthur Young, maintained sales, catalog, and a thoughtful communication with inquirerors from around the world. We wish to express deepest thanks to Robert and his wife Diana for their far-reaching contributions.

SEED LIBRARY: Thanks to the vision of Dr. Obadiah Harris, President of The Philosophical Research Society, Anodos is co-sponsoring an Arthur M. Young Memorial in the superb library at PRS in Los Angeles, California. This seed library will include Young's books as well as others important to the development of his ideas, and exhibits about his work, life, and the ongoing application of his theory in the world.

BIANNUAL AWARD: In order to encourage study and development of uses for Young's integrative metaparadigm, Anodos will present a biannual Arthur M. Young Award of $15,000 to acknowledge a significant accomplishment in the application of the theory of process for the benefit of life on earth. We extend an open invitation for candidates for this prize.
